49. Number Five
Channel five is the new station
The other four may feel frustration
At its launch there'll be big hype
Like a fruit that's juicy ready and ripe
When channel five launched in nineteen ninety-seven, I didn’t think it would do that well If I’m being honest. It came late to the game, and from day one, it has always had to play catch-up regarding the other four television channels.
I do watch Channel five, but not as often as the other four, due to the other channels having much more variety of programs. The only advantage that channel five has got over the BBC for example, is that it can advertise by way of tv commercials, but this is not the case regarding ITV and Channel four as they can also show commercials.
With the BBC raising most of its income from taxpayers, via the tv licence, it can afford to hire the best tv producers, directors and actors to create the best quality programs that people want to watch.
Going forward, no doubt channel five will continue to produce better quality programs, but long term, I can’t see where channel five will cherry pick any of the other audiences from the other channels. Saying that, if a billionaire was to invest in the tv channel then who knows!
