36. The Closing Stages
I've made a gap and increased my lead
To stand a chance I must keep it and not concede
There pushing hard to try and bring me back
With one final surge I break the tape with my last attack
When I was growing up The Grand National was a special day in our household. For those of you who don’t know, The Grand National was the most important hurdle horse race of the year along with The Derby. We would have our newspaper delivered, and after breakfast, my parents would start choosing horse names, not based on form, but if they liked the name and nothing else.
Back then, the whole country kind of got together, and everyone at work would have their own horse raffles, where everyone chose a horse and put in one pound, with the person picking the winning horse winning the price pot. No one really cared about winning, it was more about the taking part and getting people involved in a bit of fun.
Nowadays, people don’t do these kinds of things that much, due to lifestyle changes and technology, including the arrival of online betting and the closing down of betting shops. Personally, I think it’s a bit sad that these things have happened, but it’s the way life has always been if were being honest.
For a certain number of years things remain the same, and then things begin to slowly change, and not always in our favour.
The answer? Unfortunately, we must accept what’s coming our way, be it good or bad.
